Let's Celebrate American Circus Day!

Celebrated Every April 3rd.

American Circus Day is Celebrated on the anniversary of the
first circus performance in Philidiapha in 1793.

A Few Circus Facts...

  • The Circus was founded in England in the 1760s, and the first American Circus was in 1793
  • The first American circus was held in a roofless arena and had 800 seats
  • George Washington attended one of the early circus performances
  • Joshua Purdy Brown was the first in America to take a circus performance, and instead of holding it in a building, he had it in a canvas tent
  • Purdy also added the African Elephant to the act
  • In 1881, the Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus were formed

A Few Ways to Celebrate American Circus Day...

  1. Go to a circus.
  2. Visit a circus museum.
  3. Read a book about a circus.
  4. Watch a movie about a circus.
  5. Look for circus-style activities in your area. (I found a site in my area called Triangle Circus Arts)

How will I celebrate American Circus Day? I will re-read a book called Water for Elephants and then watch the movie.
